IMPORTANT

Monopoly Dream Life is no longer available to play online from the 1st of May 2015. IGT have lost their license to offer Monopoly-themed slots with Scientific Games winning the rights. They operate Barcrest and WMS Gaming with Monopoly Big Event (by Barcrest) being the first Monopoly slot to be released under the new agreement.

Monopoly Dream Life is an IGT-powered video slot with 5 reels and 20 paylines. Live the high life with the excitement of the FreeFall Symbols feature and the power of the Stacked Wilds feature. You can play from 20p a spin to £500 a spin and it has a Dream Life Bonus feature which is a free spins games.

Monopoly Dream Life uses the FreeFall Symbols feature which triggers on any winning spin. Winning symbols in the winning combination will disappear will empty spaces filled as symbols cascade from above. This means you can win time and time again from 1 spin. The feature will repeat until no winning combinations appear.

The game also benefits from the Stacked Wilds feature meaning that wilds appear stacked on the reels. This will lead to richer wins. However, the main focus is the Dream Life Bonus feature which is triggered by getting 3 bonus symbols anywhere on the reels. You will ride the elevator up to Mr Monopoly’s penthouse.

You will then choose from 16 face-down property cards. Each card will give you a certain number of free spins based on its colour. If you get a pair of the same colour, you will get higher free spins. Anyway, you need to build a hand of 4 cards with the choice to discard up to 2 cards. You can get up to 16 free spins in total. The good thing about this feature is that the free spin reels are richer with more stacks of Wild symbols than in the base game reels.

Despite decent wins being achieved in the free spins feature, I found this to be a low medium slot with smaller wins given quite frequently. I like a bit more ‘bite’ from the slots I play so would opt for higher variance games like Zeus by WMS. If you like branded slots, you should try The Dark Knight Rises by Microgaming.

If you enjoy live slots, you’ll know that Monopoly based games have been around since the days of 3 reel mechanical games. There are now 3 games online, with the latest technology and features, including Dream Life, Here and Now and Monopoly Multiplier. This game is perfectly suited to slots. There are lots of game pieces which everyone knows – and the game lends itself to creative bonus rounds too. The only question I had was whether the slot could be less boring than the holiday season family board game?

Monopoly Dream Life uses the freefalling symbols technology. This means that when you get a win, the symbols disappear (in this case literally jump off the screen) and are replaced by more symbols from above, with others falling downwards. This creates little runs of wins, which can add up nicely. Several times I have started with a smaller win (3 dogs for example) and ended up with 5 of a kind.

This slot has a modern feel, and is set above a comic book city. The graphics are sharp and the animations are well done. Some of them do go on a little long for my taste, though there is a ‘skip’ function (the start button) to move more quickly to the next spin. The sounds are mixed. As the symbols fall into place it sounds like dice being shaken in a plastic cup. When you have a win you get a descending scale tune, slightly different for each piece. This did get annoying after a while, especially the one with the ships horn. During the bonus round you get lively Hawaiian guitar music instead – I have no idea how this is connected to Monopoly.

There is only one feature, which has two parts. First there is a pick-em round, which is based on the coloured cards in the game. This determines how many free spins you get for the next part.

The basic setup is a 20 line video slot, with 5 reels and 3 rows. Online you’ll be able to spin for 20c with max lines, live casinos sometimes have this set higher. The auto spin is available as with all IGT games.

There are a lot of winning symbols in this game; these include the game pieces and rich Uncle Pennybags (the guy with the moustache from the game) in various settings. The top symbol is labelled ‘Dream Life’. 5 of these will get you 5000 coins, with 500 coins for 4. Pennybags in the casino is next, with 1000 coins for 5, in the race car gets you 500 and behind a ships wheel 300. The classic game pieces are the smaller but more frequent paying symbols.

There is a wild symbol, which can be stacked. This substitutes for all of the regular symbols above. The Bonus symbol triggers the feature round; you need 3 of them to start.

It did take me a while to get the bonus feature, though luckily the win was worth waiting for. There are two parts to this, and a journey in an elevator between them.

First you’ll play a card game with Uncle Pennybags. You choose from a table full of cards, and can discard 2 of them and keep 4. If you get the same colour twice, you get more free spins. This is like getting a ‘set’ in the board game. Once you have 4 cards, you move to the next stage- which is to run your free spins.

Wilds are a lot more stacked in this game, which means more wins, and more freefalls. This can set off a chain reaction, with several win sequences per spin. You’ll then return to the main screen. Hopefully you will see the ‘big win’ animation, with Pennybags flying his plane.

The short answer to my opening question is ‘yes’ – this slot is better than the board game (at least playing it with my extended family). This is a nicely produced slot with a few interesting features like the freefall and 2 stage feature. It bridges the gap nicely between the ‘relaxing yet simple’ games and those (like the movie tie-ins) which are a bit more intensive. I will return to this slot I am sure.
